Pre-Cal Practice

Eugene, Oregon--

Today when I arrived at practice, the QB's were working on passing drills, the defense was working on defensive skills and the special teams were working on special teams drills..what a revelation!
Something out of the ordinary that I haven't seen was the passing drills, the QB's were practicing throwing over team assistants standing with their arms extended over their heads in front of the QB's. It is agreed with talking to the other media types as we were observing the workout, without a passing game Cal is going to be a tough game to win.
The scout team played against the first string and there were formation mockups simulating the opponent. Jeremiah Masoli looked sharp as well as Nate Costa completing every pass that I saw except one which would have been a turnover. The was an expected event in a way as the scout team knew the calls the offense were performing.
I spoke with coach Azz about the players and in particular Simi Toeaina's performance during the Purdue game. It is really true that the line when it executes gets no kuddos but coach Azz clarified that due to Simi's talent, he was the one to cause the train wreck that led to two turnovers and two scores.
I was surprised about how many media attended practice, it was because of the next game coming up with Cal, this will give the Ducks a good sounding of their preparations and skill level at this time of the season. As coach Kelly expressed in his press conference on Monday "there is a ton of football yet to be played."
The usual process that occurs after practice is requests are made by the media to interview players prior to the team meeting..if it doesn't take too long.
Coach Azzinaro expressed he does give kuddos when the game film is reviewed and I'm sure there is likewise evaluation of what could be done better.
When I ask Kenjon Barner who was faster, him or Jeremiah Johnson, he replied "me!"
